Pakistan is now one of my favourite countries thanks to Shamshad and the team at Expedition Asia Trek & Tours! Michelle and I went on the 14-day K2 basecamp trek via Gondogoro La. The whole trip was 21 days, Islamabad to Islamabad. Even before we flew, the ever smiling Shamshad did an amazing job securing permits in a short timeframe when other companies turned us away. And then once we landed, Shamshad made sure everything ran smoothly from start to finish, even meeting us in Islamabad and taking us for a tasty welcome dinner. The trek was one of the best I have been on – the mountain scenery is unsurpassed. Walking along the worlds second longest glacier outside the polar region, up to the foot of the world’s second highest peak, K2, and then over Gondogoro La pass is truly spectacular. The trek ran super smoothly thanks to Shabbir (guide), Hadair (cook) and the rest of the team – the level of service was second to none. We never went hungry, and each meal was different and very tasty. Hadair found out it was my birthday 3 days into the hike, and somehow even cooked me a cake in the evening, with candles and balloon. In-fact, I think I gained weight after the trek :P! We saw several companies turning back before Gondogoro La due to porter-strikes, and some didn’t take baggage over the pass. But our team were really professional, happy, strong and marched over the pass in blizzard-like conditions with no complaints. Either side of the trek was also a highlight. Shamshad arranged for us to see some nice sights around Skardu, including the beautiful Shangri-La Resort, Upper Kachura Lake, Kharpocho Fort and Skardu market. In Islamabad we visited Faisal Mosque, Pakistan Monument, the really interesting Aabpara Market, tasty Melody Food Market, Rawal Lake, and Daman-e-Koh lookout. Thanks to Shamshad we also met some amazing Pakistanis along the way – all super friendly and welcoming. I could repeat this trip easily, and will definitely return to Pakistan.
